BSN Round 4: Undefeated Gigantes lose their first game against Atleticos

BSN Regular Season is still in too early stage and there may be still significant changes in the standings. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated Gigantes (2-1) in Carolina on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by fifth ranked Atleticos (2-2) 91-83. Atleticos dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Gigantes' 38. They outrebounded Gigantes 40-29 including 28 on the defensive glass. Atleticos looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Gabriel Belardo (188-89, college: FIU) who helped to win the game recording 30 points (on 13-of-17 shooting from the field) and the other American import Paris Bass (203-95, college: Detroit) who added 16 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. At the losing side American guard Terrico White (196-90, college: Ole Miss, agency: Shark Sports Management) responded with 27 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Atleticos moved-up to second place, which they share with Santurce and Mayaguez. Gigantes at the other side keep the third position with one game lost. Atleticos will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Gigantes will play at home against the league's second-placed Brujos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very significant was Cangrejeros' (#4) 96-82 road victory against 6th ranked Cariduros. The winners were led by the former international point guard Filiberto Rivera (189-82, college: UTEP) who scored that evening 19 points and 5 assists and Thomas Robinson supported him with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Even 18 points and 7 rebounds by international forward Emmanuel Andujar (198-93, college: Manhattan) did not help to save the game for Cariduros. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cangrejeros (2-2) moved-up to second place, which they share with San German and Mayaguez. Defending champion Cariduros keep the sixth position with three games lost. Cangrejeros will play against Mets (#6) in Guaynabo in the next round. Cariduros will have a break next round.
A very close game took place in Quebradillas between Leones and Piratas. Sixth ranked Leones (1-2) got a very close victory on the road over one of their biggest challengers Piratas (1-2). Leones managed to escape with a 3-point win 96-93 in the fight for the fourth place. Victor Liz fired 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Tu Holloway produced 32 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists (made all of his thirteen free throws !!!) for lost side. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Leones left bottom position moving up to fourth place, which they share with Quebradillas. Leones will meet league's second-placed Indios in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Piratas will play against Grises and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 4: Guayama lost to Mayaguez on the opponent's court 76-81. Winless Humacao lost to defending champion Bayamon in a home game 85-107. Arecibo managed to beat Guaynabo on the road 101-88.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 10 points and 13 rebounds by Davon Jefferson of Arecibo.

A very close game took place in Quebradillas between Leones and Piratas. Sixth ranked Leones (1-2) got a very close victory on the road over one of their biggest challengers Piratas (1-2). Dominican Victor Liz (193-86) fired 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Naturalized American forward Jose Guitian (207-87, college: Lasell) chipped in 19 points. American point guard Tu Holloway (183-89, college: Xavier) produced 32 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists (made all of his thirteen free throws !!!) and international forward Jose Rodriguez (201-92, college: Texas Southern) added 14 points and 9 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists. There was a minor upset in Mayaguez where much higher ranked Brujos (3-1) were defeated by fifth ranked Indios (2-2) 81-76 on Monday. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. Indios dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Brujos' 38. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. American center Jessie Govan (211-97, college: Georgetown) fired 25 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. The other American import Brian Conklin (201-89, college: St.Louis) chipped in 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Indios' coach Flor Melendez used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. International swingman Alex Franklin (198-88, college: Siena) produced 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and the former international forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, college: Kent St., agency: Network Sports International) added 12 points and 9 rebounds respectively for lost side. Four Brujos players scored in double figures. Indios moved-up to second place, which they share with San German and Santurce. Loser Brujos still keep top position with one game lost. They share it with Arecibo. Indios will meet at home Leones (#4) in the next round. Brujos will play against Gigantes in Carolina and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Rather predictable result in Humacao where top-ranked Vaqueros (4-0) smashed bottom-ranked Grises (0-2) 107-85 on Monday. Vaqueros dominated down low during the game scoring 64 of its points in the paint compared to Grises' 44. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. International point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-92, college: Miami, FL, agency: Shark Sports Management) fired 25 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. The former international Javier Mojica (190-84, college: CCSU) chipped in 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Vaqueros players scored in double figures. Vaqueros' coach Nelson Colon felt very confident that he used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. American forward Jonathan Ocasio (195-92, college: New Haven) produced 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and naturalized American guard Brian Vasquez (190-94) added 21 points respectively for lost side. Vaqueros have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 4-0 record. Loser Grises still closes the standings with two games lost. Vaqueros will meet league's leader Capitanes in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Grises will play against Piratas (#5) in Quebradillas and hope to get finally their first victory.

Not a big story in a game in Guaynabo where bottom-ranked Mets (0-3) were defeated by first ranked Capitanes (3-1) 101-88 on Monday. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Capitanes made 7 blocks. American forward Davon Jefferson (204-86, college: USC) fired a double-double by scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. Nigerian-American power forward Chinemelu Elonu (206-87, college: Texas A&M) chipped in 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. American power forward Diamond Stone (211-97, college: Maryland) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points and 13 rebounds and American-Dominican forward Angel Nunez (203-91, college: S.Florida) added 18 points respectively for lost side. Five Capitanes and four Mets players scored in double figures. Capitanes have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 3-1 record, which they share with Guayama. Newly promoted Mets still closes the standings with three games lost. Capitanes will meet at home league's leader Vaqueros in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Mets will play against Cangrejeros (#4) in Santurce and hope to get finally their first victory.
